Good Example Of Public Opinion Critical Thinking
Public opinion is the dominant view among the majority on a particular issue in the society. It is the attitude toward a particular aspects or group of ideas that is most popular in the community. I believe that that collective opinion forms a critical basis for making decisions and policies and, therefore, matter. In many occurrences, the public give sincere opinions basing on their experiences and hence those views offer clues of what happen in the community. However, such does not make the opinions absolute as the majority may hold views that are legally wrong and unfair to the minority. Nevertheless, such negative opinions serve to help protect the minority. For example, views about the slavery in America among the whites soon after independence, although were popular, the opinions oppressed the slaves.
Yes, race influence public opinion. Each member of the community tends to protect their perception in matters that are pertinent to them. If a policy may affect a particular race negatively, the opinions incline towards the race and the culture of the persons.
The media has the authority to choose the information they air to the public. For example, the coverage of the police brutality towards the Blacks may vary from the media to other. People tend to hold what they see in the media as the absolute truth and, therefore, form opinions basing on that information.
Gender differences are less dramatic in public opinion than the race. The fact that one belongs to a particular race and hence culture make the gender views come second after those of the race. The universal gender beliefs have racial and cultural biases.
The school I attended had strict rules guiding the behavior of all the people. These rules inculcated in me respect for others, tolerance of diversity, and respect for authority, among others. I have learned that public opinion matters in the formulation of policies. In addition, the public views depend on the race and gender of the majority. The Medias also plays a critical role in shaping public views.
