There is no doubt that the aspects of city and cinema have become increasingly entwined over the last century. Particularly, the identities of various places are closely connected and intertwined in their cinematic portrayals. Landmarks of London, New York, and Tokyo are widely used as iconic statements or symbols of power, wealth, style, culture, and status. For other individuals, sounds and images of movies form the only experiences they will ever have of some of the major cities across the globe. In the chapter “An alternative modernity: race, ethnicity and the urban experience,” the author asserts that concepts of race and ethnicity are not well understood as some of the significant moderators of the experience of modernity (Alsayyad 190).
Conclusively, the author argues that peoples understanding of the city cannot examined comprehensively without cinematic experience. To him, films not only capture the portrayal of the society, they also play a crucial and integral role in influencing and way people construct images of the world, and therefore, how the interact and operate in it.
Indeed, this book provides and engaging and enlightening conversation concerning the ever-growing issue that connects various boundaries and evokes challenging standpoints on the relationship between urban space and cinema.
