After spending 18 fruitful weeks with my facilitator and my classmates at the Battering Intervention and Prevention Program (BIPP) I consider myself lucky to have broken the cyclical chain of the domestic violence and abuse. The awareness of the problem of the domestic violence and abuse and gaining the knowledge how to deal with incidences of domestic violence and abuse has made me a better person. The BIPP is a program designed for individuals with a history of domestic violence and abuse. The basic structure of the BIPP gives individuals vital information and equips them with required tools to reconstruct shattered relations. For a long time I had justified my behavior as the natural reaction to what I had been meted out. I thought of myself as the victim and never took responsibility for my violent and abusive behavior. I kept on evading the issue till it was perhaps too late as I was on the verge of losing the most important relationships and the most important people in my life. Listening attentively to the real life stories of my classmates—people like me who were destroying their life and relationships by consciously or unconsciously indulging in domestic violence and abuse—and carefully imbibing the guidance of my facilitator I have learnt valuable lessons.
Recently, at a park I had a meaningful meeting with my daughters. During this special meeting I sought their forgiveness and promised never to treat them or their mother (my wife) with disrespect. I told them that from now onwards they would see a positive change in my behavior regarding them and their mother. I would be actively involved with their lives and share special moments with all six of them. I assured them that in future I will be present whenever they need me. Furthermore, I informed them that spending time at BIPP has made me realize my mistakes and that I have learned important lessons. From now onwards they would see a positive change in my behavior and I would do my best to heal the wounds of domestic violence and abuse that plagued my past life. I also informed them that after my successful graduation from BIPP, I would also help other individuals that suffer from violent and abusive behavior and try to make them better individuals. Personally, I will continue to focus on recognizing and addressing my anger issues. I will, especially identify and stay away from the situations that arouse my anger and even in unfair situations I will retain my composure and take time out in order to remain calm by using the techniques learnt at BIPP. Further, I will always opt for compromise even in unfair situations rather than react in a violent and abusive manner. In addition, I will try my best to deal fairly with the people around me in all situations and under all circumstances. I will never be careless or act inconsiderately and give due thought and consideration to the emotions and the feelings of all the people around me. Finally, in the future, I will never shrug away from taking full responsibility for my actions and be on my best behavior in my interactions with the all the people around me. I will take extra special care while dealing with my wife and my daughters.
My time at BIPP was much more productive than I initially expected. Sharing our life stories honestly, me and my class-mates, realized that our violent and abusive behavior was the chief cause of our domestic problems and unhappiness that plagued our previous lives. Sitting in the circle each one of us promised to change for the better. The facilitator taught us how to deal with our anger issues that were gradually but surely destroying our lives. In conclusion, my class-mates and my facilitator through the sessions at BIPP made me realize my mistakes and consequently made me a good husband, a caring father, and a better individual over-all. Thank you BIPP.
