During the 20th century, African Americans were discriminated and deprived of right and privileges in the United State. The inequality experienced by this race led to the civil rights movement that sought equality on the access on services and equal opportunity. The movement was organized through negotiations, protest demonstrations, and proposal of different laws. This movement was centered on the on the south of the United States since it had the largest African American population. Despite the several efforts that were made, the movement also faced strong opposition from the white Americans.
There are many politicians and advocates who played important roles in achieving the passage of the Civil Rights. One of them is Charles Hamilton Houston who aimed to achieve social justice. The Civil Rights Movement shows how discrimination is widespread during the World War (8:43). The “colored” Americans were separated from the whites. The services and facilities had signs with them telling which was for colored people and which one was for the whites. This segregation has strongly opposed by Hamilton and he joined the battle in 1934 to abolish the segregation system (“The Civil Rights Movement” 10:25). Another notable person is President John F, Kennedy who encouraged reform in their existing law. On the statement he made on national television, he said that the existing law needed a remedy but the reform cannot be done unless the congress acts on it (“The Civil Rights Movement” 45:47). He worked on the passage of the Civil Rights Act but was not able to do so because he was assassinated. President Lyndon Johnson continued Kennedy’s worked and passed the Civil Rights Act (“The Civil Rights Movement” 54:01). Without the help of these people, the change that the people hoped for could not be achieved.
