While quantitative research aims to enumerate, qualitative research describes data that is why it is sometimes considered the exact opposite of quantitative research. Qualitative research methods use literature in a manner that is consistent with the assumptions of the participant, and they do not prescribe the questions that need to be answered from the participant’s viewpoint. According to Zakiya (2008), qualitative research is exploratory, and the use of literature in it varies considerably. Quantitative research, on the other hand, uses literature in a substantial form at beginning of the research to provide the direction for the study and the hypothesis. In addition, the literature is included at the end of the study to compare the results of the study.
These are major differences in qualitative and quantitative research on matters of ontology and epistemology. Although a number of researchers stress that qualitative research is an inductive research while quantitative research is deductive, there are some who argue that both can be used for different purposes at different times. For instance, qualitative research can be done in a deductive way where different assumptions were made. One of the major strengths of qualitative research is that it emphasizes the use of phenomenology. Even though this word is popular and widely embraced, its meaning is so much confused as different researchers refer to it differently. Phenomenology can also refer to an inquiry of paradigm, an interpretive theory or philosophy. On the contrary, quantitative do not focus much on phenomenology (Zakiya, 2008).
Finally, ethnography refers to the process where researcher studies the structure and the functions of a group. Its aim is to give a holistic picture of a group attempting to describe the cultural and social aspects of the same group. Here, data collection varies a lot, but the most predominant data collection methods are observations and interviews. This is why this method of research is used so much in the quantitative research. Zakiya (2008) argues that, even though qualitative research is almost the same as quantitative research, the difference comes in where qualitative research involves the use of exploratory while quantitative research is enumerative in nature. The bottom line is that they both have advantages and disadvantages.

General Systems Theory Of Nursing

This system is important since it has the potential of evaluating information to assist individuals and their families progress. In this scheme, the protagonist is the nurse who acts as mechanic in the medical setting. For instance, the nurse’s work is to assess how the body of the patient is functioning and check any potential threat that needs repair and the role of the patient is to agree with whatever the nurse has decided to be done ( Mon,1979).
According to Mon (1979), in this model, the nurse must decide whether to contract or make stable forces at work. The nurses are responsible for the care, safety and coordination of the health care. This model is ideal in life threatening situations where the nurse is required to restore oxygen or fluid. Apparently, this model is not good in daily life situations. For instance, the nurse should not be responsible for the social, cultural dysfunction an individual. If she does, she will be monitoring what an individual’s aspects of life, such as what he eats the programs he watches and all his interpersonal relationships.

Summary

In brief, in general systems theory of nursing, there is a broad outline of an inanimate system in which the individual has no central role. However, this model strength lies in its clinical illustrations.
