The play “Trifles” by Glaspell is considered to be quite controversial because it is traditionally associated with the declaration of the feminist ideas. As for this essay, it is mainly aimed at analyzing one of the main characters of the play, which is Mrs. Wright. The essay argues that Mrs. Wright’s voiceless nature demonstrates her profound identity. Needless to say, Mrs. Wright appeared to be in delirious state because of murdering her husband; however, she was still justified by the two other women despite the considerable evidence that they noticed, including the “threaded needle”. What it means is that the sympathy to Mrs. Wright impacts the outcome of the story and drives; the justice that Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters considered as the major Mrs. Wrights’ characteristic helped her in getting away with the husband’s murder.
Obviously, males and females emerged to have “separate directions in life.” (Henslin, 69); such a controversy makes it clear that females are much more prone to demonstrate the solidarity within their gender community. On the other hand, it is also worth saying that “the men refer to what the women found as trifles.” (Glaspell 961) However, these details might be the keystone in terms of incriminating Mrs. Wright. It is clear that the women appear to be more productive when compiling the psychological evidence of the murder case involving Mrs. Wright.
While reading the book, it becomes apparent that Mrs. Wright is a formed individual possessing a strong personality and strong ideology. However, because she was frequently disregarded by the men, Mrs. Wright feels oppressed and socially irrelevant if not completely isolated and “grounded in the home space.” (Holstein 282) Glaspell shows what the reasonable outcome of such neglect and false interpretation can be.
It becomes apparent that the voiceless nature of Mrs. Wright proves the depth of her identity. The two women decide to hide the evidence, since they also feel the strong will of the main suspect. Mrs. Wright managed to carry the sense of cold blood justice; it endowed this woman with the serious allies, respectively. The author shows that Mrs. Wright is obviously clothed with the right to choose; and despite masculinists’ occupation, she still remained a strong individual.
