Feudalism was a decentralized and complex society out of which modern state was emerging both politically, socially and economically. Prevalently, in the system mentioned above, the fiefdom often become hereditary, and the son of the knight would inherit the land and military duties from his father after the death. Additionally, in the medieval society, community would be divided into three groups; bellatores, labores, and the oratores.
The medieval society discourages the unified government. As a matter of fact, individual lords’ would in their powers divide the land into miniature portions. The said small pieces handed over to lesser Rulers and knights. Lesser noblemen would in turn subdivide their land into even smaller units and give to fewer prominent nobles and knights.
Trade and economic growth were a common phenomenon that was highly discouraged in the society mentioned above. The owners of individual plots gave peasants available lands. The peasant had to work on the specified land. Peasants in medieval society were not allowed to change their occupation without permission. Similarly, farmers were positioned in the bottom of the society and subjected to onerous taxation (Shlapentokh et al. 42). Typically, farmers were required to grind their grains in the lord’s mills and bake all their bread in lord’s ovens.
Church played an essential role in medieval society. Church acted as a governing body, exercise jurisdiction and punishes the unruly (Shlapentokh et al. 18). In the society above, Bishops maintained order, controlled courts and raised an army. Also, the mentioned bishops were judges and had within their jurisdiction power to condemn criminal death.
