ESSAY QUESTION: How did the concept of social and Civil Rights evolve during the 20th century with regard to African-Americans in the United States? 
PROVISIONAL HYPOTHESIS: By the twentieth century, segregated blacks in the United States began to protest against white supremacy, first in small groups that gradually evolved into a more organized effort with elected leaders. The leaders initially sought to fight against segregation and the killings of blacks in the Southern States but with time, the right to vote emerged as a fundamental concept in fighting racial discrimination. Consequently, publicized riots and the brutal handling of protesting blacks grabbed the nation’s attention and by extension, that of the government.

The government concentrated on expanding the United States territories, especially in the West, and overlooked the situation in the Southern States.
Black leaders realized the only way to fight segregation was through proper access to education and earning voting rights for their people.
The application of non-violent protests finally caught the attention of the people on the dire situation in the Southern States.
