The initial groups that fall within the term “gangs” can be seen in St. Louis as early as the late 1870s. These groups were positioned in the city’s river district in the northern part of the city; these were the areas that were subjected to more socioeconomic issues, in part due to the systems of migration and development that was occurring in St. Louis at that time.
