It would seem strange to start here with To Kill a Mockingbird. However, it is necessary to refer to it as it indicates the historical context of how Black people were treated before, during, and after the Great Depression. A special reference here could be made to the Jim Crow Laws. Before the start of the Great Depression in the USA, the Civil War was always equated to the setting free of the slaves.
