Reformation - a broad religious and socio-political movement in Western and Central Europe in XVI - early XVII centuries, aimed at reforming the Catholic Christianity according to the Bible. Its beginning is considered to be the performance of the doctor of theology Martin Luther at Wittenberg University: in October 31, 1517 he nailed to the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church his "95 Theses", which opposed the existing abuses of the Catholic Church, in particular the sale of indulgences.
