For the purpose of this assignment, various communication journals will be analyzed to evaluate the discourse represented in such a field. Effectively, the journal by Reeves and Borgman (a bibliometric evaluation of core journals in communication research) will be used as the primary/ leading scholarly journal. The other scholarly articles on the similar topic that will be used will be Zepetnek’s 2002 journal (Selected Journals of Media and Communication Studies) and Gadon’s journal (The Pragmatics of Editing an International Journal: Communication in a Multicultural Context.
One similarity of these journals is as regards to their subject manner. This is expected because they handle a similar issue: communication preference and discourse. Borgman’s journal is based on human communication research. According to the argument given by the author, communication in human beings is effected differently, depending on the unique characteristics of an individual. To achieve the intended purpose of the article, the authors take the extra mile by evaluating the core and major journals in the history of communication research to come up with correct information. To some extent, he secondary articles seem to employ a similar tactic and talk of the same issue. Among all the articles, several elements are consistent. For instance, all the articles use a similar documentation style (APA). They all use simple language which is easy to understand. Organization of the pieces is well-structured in both articles whereby the key points are given priority. To add on this, the conclusions given are based on logic, giving the articles the validity they require. In cases where some points have been argued without evidence, the common approach taken by these articles is that they support the key points.
Another good point to note would involve sentence structure. As a fact, the articles use both long and short sentences in the paragraphs. The number of words used in a sentence and a paragraph differ from one article to the other and from one paragraph to the other, lacking uniformity. Being a communication nature, it is important to note that the nature of the articles is theory-based, with some explanations that give the evidence to the arguments given. In all the articles, visuals are at times used to present technical materials. The evidence given in the materials is based on logical arguments and the reasonable conclusions that may arise. Personal experiences and examples are also used in the articles adequately, giving them a similarity. In an explicit manner, the reader’s benefits are well incorporated in all the articles. The fact that all the leaders have used the appropriate language to meet the needs of the audiences means that they can be classified together as communication journals.
Apart from the above similarities in the articles, several differences arise. For instance, the targeted audiences differ from one article to the other. The beliefs and values being communicated also differ. With this, the writers use different mechanisms to appeal to the values and beliefs being communicated. The technicality and choice of words also differ from one author to the other. Incredibly, the authors seem to employ similar evidences to persuade the readers. This is however understandable as the matters being communicated are similar. The level of technical ability also differs from one author to the other. Despite this approach, the choice of words is consistent among all the articles.
