Can Beowulf Save America Article Review Example

Bates in his article points out the disillusionment that the Obama presidency had after they were confronted by the divisiveness of the American society, a sharp contrasted to the United America that the president had hoped for. He proposes that just as Beowulf identifies the enemy, America should also identify its enemy, which he deems is anger and reduced national wealth, and deal with it. It is agreeable that the levels of anger in America have risen and everyone seems to be angry at every other person. In the leadership, the Republicans are angry at the democrats and seem determined to shoot down every legislation. The people’s frustration has boiled over and the government is no longer a representation of hope. Just like Beowulf, the people and the government need to identify what threatens the prosperity of America and together, fight a common battle to overcome it, without fierce opposition.
Bates also points out that ‘we see a comparable rage in those American citizens who verbally lash out at neighbors who they think have been unfairly granted privileges.’ This, in the recent times has been evident in the racial undertones and allegations of unfair treatment of African American and high handedness of law enforcement towards the African American population. Is such a situation, it would be healthy for the American society if everyone rose up and spoke against such matters that threaten the unity of all Americans. The anger is also seen in the negative attitude towards immigrants which has bred intolerance.
We all have a personal and national Grendel that we need to deal with. Overcoming procrastination is one such which I intend to overcome by being proactive and taking up opportunities as they arise.
