In this article, I learned many lessons that would definitely improve my thinking about the business side. Firstly, markets should do different flavors, from a country to country, which depend on that country’s culture about food. In the beginning, a research needs to be done on what people in that country like, or do not like. Then, the company can work with those products these people would like, and do not indulge in the taste these people would not like to keep your business stand up. For example, Haagen Daze thought that, what American people like about their product, the other countries would like it, too. But, they were wrong in the first place, because each country has some different traditions and prefer different flavors in their food. I have experienced the same situation. In my country, Saudi Arabia, Layes produces Potato Ketchup, and people there love it. I am a person who loves it, too. When I came to the United States, I saw that Lays does not actually produce any potato Ketchup here. Worse, I do not see any other company produce potato ketchup as well. That can only mean - people in the United States do not like potato ketchup. Also, Lays has developed a good strategy to produce different products, from a country to country, depending on what these people prefer to consume.
For “Cool Britannia” ice cream products, I think they won't be that much of success in the United States, as they are in the United Kingdom. I noticed in the United States, there is no strawberry ice cream, and it means they do not like it. So, Haagen Daze learned from their lesson and did not repeat the same mistake of chocolate chip cookie dough flavor, when it failed to sell in the United Kingdom. However, if Haagen Daze market produced “Cool Britannia” to my country, Saudi Arabia, that would have worked fine and got high sales. Saudi Arabians love ice cream with strawberry flavor.
If Haagen Daze market hired me to work for them, I would suggest using the Saudi Arabian strategy to develop chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla flavors. Actually, the Saudi people love all of the sweet flavors. But the biggest success flavor would be chocolate because adults and children alike love it more than any other flavor. If someone is quite not sure of trying the new Haagen Daze product, I would say this is an American product. Then, they will try it and love it because most of the Saudi people love America, and I am sure they will trust in its products.
Many people believe that the British and American markets are quite similar due to the common language and origins. However, as Haagen- Daze, the famous ice cream maker found out, the two cultures have very different markets. Products need to be adapted to successfully penetrate a market. For example, in the United States, people prefer large packages, whereas Europeans and others prefer smaller packages, since the countries are far more densely-populated than the United States. Since most Americans drive their cars to supermarkets or wholesale shopping clubs (such as Costco, BJs, Sam’s Club), it is relatively easy to purchase large quantities/boxes of goods and transport them, whereas Europeans and Asians are more likely to rely on public transportation and have little space to store these items.
Americans are known as ice cream aficionados and they genuinely love chocolate chip cookie dough flavor, which is vanilla ice cream with large pieces of ground-up chocolate chip cookies. This flavor has been popular since Americans have a “sweet tooth” and genuinely love chocolate chip cookies. Because of Haagen Daze’ tremendous success with this product, they decided to launch it in the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, after several months of disappointing sales, Haagen Daze aborted this experiment and decided to launch a contest to find a new flavor in Great Britain. Haagen Daze learned that chocolate chip cookies are generally not popular in England, so an ice cream flavor made with chocolate chip cookie chunks would likely never catch on. Instead, they came up with “Cool Britannia,” vanilla ice cream with strawberries and classic Scottish shortbread. “Cool Britannia” soon became a favorite throughout the UK.
