Tundra comes from the Finnish word ‘tunturia’, which means a barren land. It is the coldest and driest biome on Earth; the vast and treeless land covers about 20 % of the earth’s surface and is located in the Northern Hemisphere. The annual average annual temperatures ranges from -40°F in the winter to 65°F in the summer and winter temperature is below freezing (32°F) for the majority of the year.
