After reading Electronic Literature by N. Katherine Hayles, it set me thinking as to why I had never looked at the text on the internet as just another text and not an art form with endless possibilities. The current state of electronic literature is still evolving and developing but is different from the print, although the two medium overlap in some areas. The web is a fast changing world and leaves its impact on the electronic literature as well as the designers, writers, graphic artists, etc. The digitized literature created on the computer is meant to be used and read in the virtual world and the medium is already pushing the horizons of literary traditions.

"You did not see the thing because you did not know how to look. Moreover, you do not know how to look because you do not know the names."
It is true that the electronic literature has its history and can be traced back to the evolution of digital computers. No one can deny the influences of the digital culture on the social and cultural changes. The Electronic Literature Organization looks at the literature in electronic media, its writing, publishing, and reading. I agree with Hayles when she says that readers come to the digital literature with expectations based on print. The digital literature has to work hard to meet those expectations and even perform better to keep the reader interested.
We are living in a contemporary era, where both print and digital technologies are thoroughly integrated and what we see in print media today was first created digitally. Major genres of electronic literature evolve based on the expectations of the user as well as the underlying code. Reader can jump to different pages via linking structures based on hypertext technology or enjoy narrative poem. Many electronic literature works are interactive and have game elements, animations and other fun elements. The next move is to immerse electronic literature in three-dimensional spaces and provide location-specific narratives possible because of GPS technologies.
Hayles is right when she comments that the endless possibilities with digital literature are not only motivating but also challenging for the writers, users, and critics to bring together infinite strategies. The electronic literature offers much more flexibility and freedom to the reader. I agree with Hayles when she says that electronic literature can be freely disseminated to a wider audience via cross-platform options but will need to be protected and preserved with extra care. XML or Extensible Markup Language plays an important role in the preservation of older electronic literature and allow works to be archived properly as well as develop innovative tools for the easy reading.
I feel that there are so many possibilities with electronic literature and offers a robust platform to a much wider population of writers as well as readers to come together.
