The question about how much beneficial sports are for high school students has an appropriate answer: all work and no play makes jack a dull boy. Sport has many effects on the high school students. We all know that the resources are always limited but things kept in moderation cannot cause harm. The budget always needs to be distributed properly. If the academic budget is not distributed properly, it would cause a hindrance in the educational success of students but if the resources are well-managed, there is no doubt that sport activities would have positive effects on the students to some extent.
Firstly, students adopt many positive aspects of life such as self-discipline, self-esteem, patience and cooperation. They realize the importance of team work which develops a sense of respect towards their team mates and helps them to learn to appreciate their contributions. Together they work for the same goal and share the happiness of success as well as the unhappiness of failure. This gives them confidence and courage. They get a chance of comparing their own abilities with those of their mates which improves their power of judgment. They tend to become less inimical and hostile towards other students regardless of their race and ethical background which enables them to become more social and outgoing. Moreover, such interactions facilitate lasting friendships. Non-participants, on the other hand, do not have such an open opportunity for the attainment of such characteristics.
Secondly, students who actively participate in sports have fit and healthy bodies. Physical activity lessens their chances of developing osteoporosis, heart and other chronic diseases in later life. In comparison to them, students who do not participate in sports resort to sedentary activities which make them more prone to suffer from obesity, anxiety, stress and other behavioral problems.
Thirdly, sports have beneficial effects on the educational career of students. According to the general research consensus, students who actively participate in the athletic activities tend to achieve better grades then those who don't and are likely to earn more (Daniel H. Bowen Jay P. Greene 3). The researches have been conducted empirically and have shown positive effects on homework completion rates, test scores and rate of absenteeism. Such students also have higher educational aspirations and they actually enroll themselves for higher studies but students who do not participate have a better chance of focusing entirely on their studies without many distractions (Daniel H. Bowen Jay P. Greene 3). Though the positive effects of sports seem to be many yet there are some elements which are unhealthy. Majority of the students who are not the participants of athletic activities get disturbed academically when the participants are helped. Most of the attention is diverted towards the participants and they enjoy superiority over the non-participants which make them think that they are better than the other students (Daniel H. Bowen Jay P. Greene 4). Often the pressure of winning replaces the fun of playing with a feeling of doing some work which can be a burden for the students. They not only have to cope up with their academic classes but also have to attend training classes which becomes very exhausting for the students and they feel stressed out.
