Researches worldwide suggest that the turnover of employees in the hospitality industry is the highest. According to studies the average employee turnover level among management hotel employees is about 25% and about 50% for non-management staff in the US (Cha-international.com, 2015). Retention experts are of the view that hotels incur huge costs annually for each new employee they should train to replace an experienced one who leaves. Some of the ways for motivating employees and thus increase the retention rates in the hospitality industry include;
Communication; a well-planned communication policy is critical to help reduce the conflicts amongst employees and between staff and management. Regular meetings that provide employees with the raise issue and receive feedback. This breeds a friendly work environment thus drives staff loyalty.
A reward system that is well structured; the reward structure in the industry needs to be well structured as to give recognition to hardworking employees, irrespective of their position. Recognition cab is either monetary or non-monetary. The current reward systems for the hospitality industry has for long been focused on the management staff while neglecting the non-management staff who are the more.
Recruiting the right individuals; there is need to pay particular attention to the people being recruited for available positions. The individuals need to fit the position in terms of qualifications but also in their interpersonal skills.
Provide development opportunities; giving employees an opportunity personal and professional development through training, seminars, job shadowing, mentoring and possible scholarships to advance their studies can increase the retention rate since this makes them feel valued.
There is a lot that the hospitality industry management can do to increase employee retention. The outlined management practices outlined above not lead to higher employee retention but also increase satisfaction, motivation, engagement and staff performance. All of which are good for any business.
