Response to Question 1: What is izzat and why is so important? What does it look like (for men, for women)? What would you do to preserve or defend it? Where does it fit into the choice to attempt suicide?
Izzat is a term that refers to the conception of honor dominant in the culture of Pakistan and Northern India. One of the concepts of Izzat is the capability to maintain one’s reputation as well as that of family, and revenge could be taken against one whenever they break this same obligation. Izzat plays a crucial role in Indian political dynamics up to this present day. Within the post-independence India, the Izzat politics has been instrumental for the rise of elected political figures from their backward communities. Such politicians are said to have performed minimally to benefit their communities though have generated greater Izzat for themselves by forming powerful political blocks. Izzat has also been used by politicians in ruling party for the interests of the citizens.
Response to Question 2: With regard to attitudes about sexuality and the body, what do you associate with the term modern? What do you associate with the term traditional? When do you think of when you say modern? When do you think of when you say traditional?
Modern sexual morals compromise of an integral portion of behavioral ethics that is applicable to humans. Embedded in modern sexual ethics are some of the many behavioral patterns, personal habits, and social norms that are linked directly with sexual instinct. Within modern sexuality, there is female modesty, female aversion to expose their bodily nakedness in the public limelight, female inclination to covering their private parts, a wife’s faithfulness to her husband, female chastity, as well as male sense of honor concerning female members found within the household. Traditional sexuality is contrary to the modern one, since the traditional one emphasizes much on preservation of the morals. It thus touches on prohibition of adultery, treating celibacy as too saintly, debarring obscenity or pornography, avoiding sexual contact with menstruating women, and avoiding marriage between persons too closely related.
Response to Question 3: Bombay is a city throbbing with sexual energy: why is it more acceptable and more public there than in other places?
Bombay is a city that has been humming and throbbing with a lot of sexual energy. It is composed of migrant men without women. It is defined with sailors drawn from many nations, the fashion models, the Hollywood wannabes, as well as the womanless rickshaw-wallahs– who are all thrown into the search for some heat and a furtive fuck in any hidden venue that is conducive for the act. The morals of this city’s original inhabitants have also been compromised with, due to the influence of the immigrants, who come here with the core purpose of leisure and pleasure. There is a lot of sexual frenzy of this closed society, where women of Golpitha are the real gutters for these men’s emissions.
Response to Question 4: Summarize in your own words the value system of the Bombay dance halls as described in Maximum City. (In other words: what do the people profiled here value most? How do they define that? Or in still other words: What do they want, and what will they give up for it?)
Bombay bar dance system refers to bars where there is a lot of adult engagement in form of dances by relatively well-covered women who perform for male patrons in substitute for cash offers. Dance bars have continued thriving though in undercover way in Mumbai, extending to its outskirts. The city of Mumbai alone has 800 dance bars, and some of these are illegal. Some of the bars do function as fronts where prostitution is highly done. Even when there was a ban on some of the activities going on in the bars, still there was not rehabilitation programs put in place for the sake of the habitual night club dancers.
Response to Question 5: Using examples from the lectures and film clips you have heard and seen, discuss one of the ways in which "improper" love (across caste lines, religious lines, or gender/sexuality lines) can be a challenge to the dominant social order.
Improper love scenes have the potential to spoil the inhabitants of a society by also contributing to moral decay of some of the highly-preserved practices. Life is not all about sex, love, and enjoyment, but encompasses several aspects that contribute to a meaningful life. Every time people, with reference to the case in Bombay City, lose focus and engage in unlawful acts. People become vulnerable to be carrying away by the wings of evil vices.
