The Modern Language Association, realizing the importance of giving credit to the sources from which information has been obtained, established rules and criteria for citing information in non-fiction documents. The guidelines provided by this Association have come to be known as MLA style. The MLA style also describes how to format a manuscript in addition to the citation guidelines.
In order to gain a proper perceptive of the MLA style, two publications are of great help: MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (7th edition) and MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (3rd edition). The guidelines provide a format for the paper itself. For example, it specifies that the margins on all sides should amount to 1 inch. The text should be double-spaced. The recommended font size is 12 points. The first line of the paragraph is indented by half an inch. This can be done by using the Tab key on the keyboard. A header on the upper right corner of the page has to be created in order to display the page number and the writer’s last name. The header is half inch from the top.
The MLA citation guide calls for in-text citations, also known as parenthetical citations, that refer to detailed citations on the last page of the essay titled ‘Works Cited’. The parenthetical citations are a brief reference while the detailed information about the source is provided on the Works Cited page. For a parenthetical citation, the author’s last name and the page number in case of a book are enough to recognize a source. However, if the author’s name has been included in the sentence itself, then there is no need to repeat it in the parenthesis. Rules have also been provided for citing a website, book, journal, and the like on the Works Cited page which can be found in the guidelines published by the Association.
