3M’s David Windorski used a classic approach to generate ideas from students about the Post-it Flag Highlighter product. David did this by using his classic textbook to generate a business idea that was in his mind from his students. He conducted market research on students using his textbook whereby he asked the students to provide information of what content they carried. In addition, he also requested students to provide information about what they knew about the old models of highlighter product. The research followed interviews on the students several times in order to yield concise results.
David and 3M Company then provided working models on the product and further produced many samples for use for a month. After this exercise, the company collected student’s reaction using questionnaires. The student’s responses on the highlighter samples provided was well analysed and applied by the company something that play a great role in the development of 3M highlighter product. This strategy was one of the best whereby idea was developed by using the available resource.
The ideas generated from the students became the starting point for the development of the 3M highlighter product. The ideas generated were tested in the 3M laboratories and through the test, a new 3M highlighter came to existence and was marketed. As a result, the product became very popular that 3m had projected. 3M Company receives good sentiments regarding from the end users regarding the degree to which they like the product. The company followed the ideas in coming up with product. As a fact, marketing research provides the sediment that customers need and prefer from a company’s products. Once the company considers this needs and preferences then automatically the product becomes successful in the market.
