Smoking Cessation

Hall, L., & Yang Irene. (2014). “Smoking cessation and relapse challenges reported by postpartum women.” Print
Purpose of the Research: The main objective of the research is to have an insight on the difference of postpartum inpatient women and former smokers on their needs for smoking cessation. Furthermore the cessation processes were classified and was given by healthcare providers. The study would also compare the secondhand smoke exposure of those patients, their interests in intervention at post-discharge, the perceived barriers of stopping the smokers and the self-efficacy of smoking abstinence.

Review of Related Literature

The research has cited previous studies related to methods of smoking cessation. Moreover, the descriptive study has also based their research design to previous patient survey studies. Some related studies are pertaining to the postpartum inpatient women that have low income. Additionally, it has been correlated with that of the research design. Psychological aspects of stopping the smokers were also used as a reference for the study (by which it was also used as a parameter in the research design). The relevant studies were also classified as recent ones. Most of them were conducted on years 2002-2009; making the research design a commendable one.

Research Design

The research design was to establish a report on postpartum women that would be assisted in smoking cessation in the inpatient setting. The descriptive and comparative research design has used a cross-sectional survey. The population is about 24 postpartum women in the inpatient setting. Moreover, the giving of the survey is through personal contact; a direct face-to-face interview. The respondents and the proponents both have pencils and papers and for the survey. The assessment was also carried out with the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System and the SASE range scale.

Instruments/Tools

The method used in the smoking cessation is called the “cold-turkey” method. It is a means by which healthcare providers or any support groups give encouragement to the smoker in quitting abruptly. This could have adverse effects but it would also be intervene by healthcare providers in a timely manner.
Moreover, to give credibility to the study the University’s Institutional Review Board approved it. The respondents of the research design were also given the prior information about the study. Additionally, the proponents have given a letter of consent which is to be signed by the patients. The benefits of the study were also discussed for the patients.

Results

The result of the study has shown that those in patient women are mostly unemployed and Medicaid insured. If they are not unemployed some of them only have low incomes. About 66% of the present patient that smokes has shown that they needed help in stopping their vices. Smoking cessation for them is not an easy task considering their low self-efficacy. Most women in those two different groups were categorized as individuals that need subsequent advice of quitting smoke. There is a little variation of smoking cessation methods for both groups and only a few have received specific types of help. The smoking cessation method used predominantly is the cold turkey method. A greater number of former smokers have chosen the home environment that is free of smoke. On the other hand there are more current smokers that are interested in post discharge interventions than former smokers.

Comments

Implications of the study are that healthcare providers should provide affordable services to patients that in need of smoke cessation. Former smokers need the interventions in order for them to maintain their smoke free life on the other hand current smoker in post-partum in patient setting needs proper help from support groups when opting to use cold turkey method. The screening of possible depression due to withdrawal must also be administered. Moreover, the smoking cessation shall be done to inpatient setting and to be continued after discharged.
