In the contemporary times, one of the major issues faced by the human beings throughout the world is associated with environmental pollution; water pollution among the top. It has become a principal challenge to provide safe and uncontaminated freshwater to the 7 billion inhabitants of this planet. Provision and accessibility to clean water today have turned out to be the chief requirements for the growing world population and its wellbeing (Pechan & de Vries 2). It is worth-mentioning that water pollution has severe negative consequences for human physical health including neurological disorders, respiratory diseases, cancers, diarrheal diseases, and cardiovascular disease (Jamison 817). Thus, water pollution is a principal global environmental crisis “considering that only 3% of the world’s water is fresh and only half of that percentage is drinkable” (Leonard 1289).
Health risks are created expansively due to the presence of chemical pollutants in the surface water. This is because such watercourses are regularly used as direct sources of drinking water or have a connection with shallow wells containing drinkable water. Moreover, these waterways play considerable role in various aspects including recreation, farming, cleaning, fishing, and washing. Another cause of water pollution is the contamination of groundwater due to the presence of fluoride and arsenic and other toxic materials that seep through rock layers and cause groundwater to become undrinkable. Industrial sites and poorly-designed perilous waste sites also cause water pollution due to direct contamination (Jamison 820). In the similar fashion, nitrogen fertilizers usage can result in water pollution particularly in regions where there has been an increasing intensification in agricultural inputs. Radioactive waste, oil spillage, thermal pollution, sediment disruption, plastics, and alien species are also numerous factors that contribute in the increasingly-prevalent water pollution. These wastes are not only hazardous for human beings but also cause severe harm to the marine animals and plant species.
There are a number of ways in which water pollution can be resolved and controlled. In many countries, the respective governments have introduced and implemented strict rules and regulations for the minimization of water pollution. Such laws are generally directed towards factories, industries, hospitals, and other civic facilities requiring them to take serious measures for the disposition, treatment, and management of sewage. However, it is also important to introduce efficient sewage treatment for minimizing the severe consequences of pollution in waterways and water sources. Similarly, it is excessively essential to educate the general public regarding the hazards of water pollution. It is equally important to encourage them to not dispose wastes in water sources and keeping the environment clean.
In short, “the pollution of fresh water is not only a contemporary threat to the living creatures that consume it but is also a potential source of future conflicts and wars” (Leonard 1289). Water pollution has emerged as a nuisance for the wellbeing of people all around the world. If appropriate and timely measures are not taken, this menace can become greater. Therefore, it is the high time for authorities, governments, and people to take proper steps in their capacities to avoid polluting the water. Measures must also be taken to invest governmental and personal resources for the sustenance and improvement of water quality. To conclude, it needs to be understood that engagement in activities that cause water pollution must be discouraged at every level and everyone should participate in resolving this issue.
