The article “Hawthorne’s The Birthmark: Science and Romance as Belief”

is about a person called Aylmer who is a professional scientific researcher. He decides to take a break from his work to marry a lady known as Georgina. Georgina has a birthmark on her left cheek which Aylmer dislikes. He suggests to his wife that she should allow him to get rid of the birthmark so as to enhance her beauty. Aylmer believes that he is the best person to perform the operation. At the beginning, Georgina is adamant because she feels that the birthmark is natural and Aylmer should appreciate her the way she is. She finally agrees to do away with it after being persuaded by her husband.
The book concentrates on two major themes. The themes outlined in the book are submission and obsession. Aylmer allows his passion for science to override the precious gift he has in his life. Aminadab, an assistant to Aylmer is tasked with the responsibility of removing the birthmark. He feels as though his senior is making a mistake having worked with him for a while. Georgina decides to risk her life for the sake of her marriage. She willingly accepts what she is uncomfortable with since she wants to be a good spouse.
Hawthorne states that ‘and with her whole spirit, she prayed, that, for a single moment, she might satisfy his highest and deepest conception. Longer than one moment, she well knew, it could not be; for his spirit was ever on the march--ever ascending--and each instant required something that was beyond the scope of the instant before’ (Hawthorne 241).
