American Nursing Association (ANA) defines violence in healthcare facilities as any threatening behavior, physical assault or verbal abuse that takes place at Health care facilities between arrogant patients and medical health practitioners such as nurses. Nurses are health professionals who are concerned with caregiving to the patients in the health care centers and facilities. Physical violence has been an epidemic problem affecting the workability of nurses in all settings. Nurses deserve to work in an environment in which they are motivated to function better and well recognized (Byrne, 2010, p. 57). Actions of violence discourage nurses in their healthcare delivery.
This paper explored the different kinds of violence in health care and nursing interventions that have been embraced to contain the situation. There are various scenarios that have led violence in health care setting. Some diseases such as cerebral malaria, psychological illnesses and maternity cases have resulted in a lot of violence against nurses born by the patients. Cerebral malaria patients have brutally fought nurses even causing them severe injuries. Psychological perceptions and illnesses have triggered some patients to develop negative perceptions towards nurses. These kind of mental disorders have led to assaults, harassments, batteries and even some fatal cases.
Below is a table showing chances of the reported physical and verbal violence from aggressive patients. The data takes a sample of 200 nurses (100males and 100 females) and the reported cases on the month of February 2015 in St. Mary’s Nursing Home, California.
There is no national standard that demands workplace violence fortification, some states have embraced legislative measures including compulsory establishment of intensive avoidance program for healthcare employers, as well as increased punishments for those found practicing assaults of nurses and other health care personnel. Some other hospitals have their own forces that intervene in case of violence eruptions. Nurses should learn how to recognize chances of violence and determine personal ways of attending to their safety. In most of the cases, it is intricate to find authoritative arms that would always solve chances of violence between the patients and nurses; therefore, these nursing violence interventions are very critical for their safety (Protection: Privacy, Safety, and Standards-Ethical Issues in Nursing, 2012, p. 77). It is advisable for nurses always to have an escape route when handling an aggressive person. Avoiding criticizing aggressive patients is a nursing intervention in curbing violence and boosting nursing safety (Tweedy, 2015, p. 19).
Nurses handle very sensitive equipments to patients and themselves. Sharp instruments such as needles and knives may result in transmissions of diseases from a patient to a nurse if not keenly handled. Therefore, to reduce the risk of transmission of diseases through cuts and other blood contacts, resulting from violence, modern hands gloves have been improvised. These gloves are hard for needles’ penetration as well as convenient enough for equipment handling.
