An error is a form of learner language that violates or deviates from the target rule of the language being acquired. The topic of errors and their correction in the second language (L2) sparks some controversy between the teachers of the language and the acquisition of L2 researchers. After several decades of offering immersion programs that are considered successful, students taking L2 tests proceed with their studies despite, not get good grades in the second language. They end up committing errors in the language and hence helping them develop good communication skills. The analysis of mistakes owes its place to S.P Corder as a scientific method when it comes to linguistics. Before Corder, linguistics saw learner’s errors, subdivided them and sought for similarities. However, there was less attention on their significant on the acquisition of the second language. Corder showed how the errors impacted on the acquisition of the second language. He explained various concepts about the issue. First, it is the learner that defines what the input is. It is because the teacher gives the linguistic form that is not the input, but it is what is available for learning. The article said that the needs of the learners should be put under consideration when the planning for the syllabuses is done. They should give particular attention to specialized needs of particular students. Additionally, learners have an inbuilt program that is more important that what is provided by the teachers. Corder added that the errors from the learners confirm the existence of the program thus teachers are supposed to regulate and correct them. Furthermore, errors are significant to the teacher, researcher and learner in such a way that they show the progress of the student, how the language is acquired and how the learner can learn from these errors. The correction of errors can be applied in various ways in the classroom. First, students should always consult with the teachers or the language researchers if in any doubt about any word or phrase. This will help improve their certainty in the improvement of their language. Second, they need to practice speaking and writing in the language. Just learning in the classroom and ending it there cannot help them improve. Studies show that the practice outside the classroom is much important than any other practice. It exposed the learner to the real-life situation and the practical application of the language.
In addition, the students should not be so much concerned with the common informal words within the language. They need to learn how to avoid them. This assists them to improve the formal application of the language. The learners need to make arrangements with their teachers for a special session with those having special needs. A one on one experience makes it vivid for the learners not to forget what they are being taught. They should also ensure that the syllabuses they are being taught take into consideration their language needs. As mentioned earlier, some syllabuses do not conform to certain language requirements, and therefore teachers tend to teach things that are out of the context (Piasecka, Malgorzata & Wilk, 2014).
In conclusion, the authorities responsible for education need to revisit their regulations and the general information about L2 and make the required changes. Failure to do this can lead the learners to problems. Teachers, researchers about the language and authorities have crashed over the past about this. Proper mechanisms need to be instituted for the better survival and eventual success of the learners. If these are not well coordinated, it will lead the linguistics fraternity into problems.
