S. Pearl Sharp, through her Rap Poem “It’s the law” sarcastically provokes the reader to

contemplate upon the ideology behind framing laws in the United States. Sharp basically says that the laws are framed fearing man does not behave fairly with himself and others, and hence laws are of no value unless man changes his behavior. Unfortunately there is no law to promote love between fellow human beings. Therefore, a true law could be one that promotes true moral values and love for others and the self.
Sharp warns Americans that one can learn about U.S.A. by its laws; laws of the country, in fact, reflect the state of affairs of the nation. Laws remind the citizens that even when they are not mentally happy with others and the life situations they should behave fairly with others. It is said that circumstances do not make man, instead they reveal him. Thus, laws are meant to help man reveal his goodness to others even when his circumstances are unfavorable. In other words, a man should not steal when he is penniless or another man hurt an old lady because she does not behave the way he wants her to behave. Sadly, there is no law yet to promote brotherly love among us. One should not forget that the laws currently in force are a sign that we do not have a vision of love. Unable to influence someone on how to treat others, we have laws to direct even the behavior of mothers and fathers. The more the number of laws we have in the country the more irrational and unfair our actions are toward others and the society. Laws are shameful to the country; to do away with the laws each individual should change his or her attitude.
The world is a place we all have come together to enjoy, for which respecting others is quite important. One who is not able to respect others is in fact the one who does not have respect for his own self. There is no point in either feeling proud of oneself or being tough with others. One must learn how to respect himself through self awareness and learning, and hence should keep on learning from the mistakes and every opportunity to learn new skills, which would increase his self respect. One should also be very flexible in life so that he can approach things from others’ point of view to take decisions in favor of others. Self reflection and contemplation are essential to realize one’s own worth and learn to respect the self. One who respects himself will treat his body as though it were a temple, with clean habits without getting addicted to drugs or sexual immorality; apart from keeping his body clean he also keeps his mind pure by feeding it with good thoughts. One should thus use his heart and mind as the law to control the actions of the body and the brain.
We framed laws from time to time to control others like fighting the Indians who threatened our security. Laws are always negative in the sense they are indicators of man’s irrationality. We have to do away with this shamefulness of having laws in the country, the only way for that is to change our behaviors. Changing our behavior to treat each other with love and fairness would be indeed tough; toughness alone removes the blot the laws have made on our society. If someone never wants to hurt someone else there is no point in saying “please don’t do this to me.” Conversely there is no need of any law if everyone wants to treat everyone else with respect. Thus treating someone the way we want them to treat us is the key to establish the true law of love in the society.
