There are seven dimensions in wellness program, which ensure a holistic model in recognizing environmental, physical, social, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and vocational aspects of wellness . The physical dimension ensures that all aspects of body in an elderly person are at its maximum capacity, delaying the onset of diseases and dysfunction until the last stages of life. This requires proper exercise, nutrition, management of weight, self-care habits, stress reduction, adequate sleep, and prevention behaviors to fulfill the daily requirements. The community based wellness programs ensures in promoting health and safe lifestyles among elderly people. These are:
Regular Walking programs
Exercise classes emphasizing on strength, balance and flexibility
Fall avoidance programs like evidence based programs
Aspects of safe driving, and the effects of becoming old in driving capabilities
Cognitive programs to rouse memory and brain
Home-safety education programs
Program to interact with younger people where they can share their experiences and skills
Theories of gerontology
There are several theories of which Biological theories of aging is the most important that helps in understanding of clinical decisions in gerontology. The biological theories cover a number of theories of which the most important are Genetics theory, Molecular or Cellular theories of aging, System Level theories . The basic concepts of this theory identify the biochemical characteristic cell changes that lead to death. DNA of cells is susceptible to damage by a number of environmental and internal factors like oxidation etc. Taking care of all these elements will help an individual in health care setting to make proper and vital decisions regarding gerontology that will the help in improving the health of not only of a single person but the entire community as a whole.
