Other than the relationship between an organization and its customers, employer- employee relationships are very essential. The employees are the image of the company and undertake the objectives of the organization. Successful employers realize that without proper training and development their employees will remain stagnant. In the end, shrewd managers gain a competitive advantage over other firms in the industry.
Sometimes employees may think that skill development is a waste of time. This may be due to either personal reasons or the employee is in a comfort zone in the organization. However, learning is a continuous process and each day is an opportunity to develop in to a better person (Meyer, Becker, and Vandenberghe 6). Employees who enroll for further classes and participate in internal employee development programs will not only perform their duties better but also quicker and with precision.
Those who feel comfortable in their current positions will not be valuable for long. Soon new and more talented people will join the company and those with little skills will have to be laid off. Lack of development on an employee leaves them vulnerable to sacking (Tansky and Cohen 8). They are also lacking in knowledge and top management may think the employee does not share the vision of the company.
Finally, employers and management ought not to force employees to develop their on- job skills. The employee should be intrinsically motivated to develop their skills since the move is beneficial to both parties. On the other hand managers can decide to pay for employee development training to have a better workforce. Sometimes costs deter employees from seeking further training.
