Good Essay About Causes Of The Rebirth Of European Civilization
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476AD, Europe was comprised of local feudal entities, and there was no trade or urban development. The Roman empire had united Europe through trade and interaction. This interaction encouraged urban civilization and the creation of a common European civilization.
After engaging in conflict with local conflicts, the Romans tended to assimilate groups into their empire, creating roads, cities, and trade routes. Trade and commerce created cities, urban trading hubs with inter-dependent economies that encouraged stability, civilization and unification. New social classes were created, educational centers were established and other elements and building blocks of civilization grew out of economic trade. When the empire collapsed, the network of trade ended and society retreated into isolated enclaves. With no transmission of cultures, ideas, goods and services, the “dark ages” were a time of intellectual and economic stagnation, with local economies and a feudalistic society.
The Crusades, initiated in 1095, opened up trade routes with the
East, and throughout Europe to supply the Crusaders. The Crusades also united
European society in a common cause against the Islamic world. Crusaders returned to their local areas with new knowledge and broadened horizons. However, interaction with the Islamic world also encouraged civilization. Christianity and commerce united Europe into a civilization. All the feudalistic warlords throughout Europe united in a single cause under the auspices of Christianity, under the authority of the Pope. Along with new ways of thinking, the stage was set of the Renaissance.
