In the business world, success can be achieved only if there is a balance between the realities of business model and needs of the employees. The psychological contract is a phenomenon that describes the mutual beliefs, informal obligations and perceptions between employer and employee. It is an individual’s perception of their expectations from the organization that they will get their services and loyalty towards the organization such as wages, fringe benefits, job security, etc.
Psychological contract does not only include the expectations but also the duties that they have to perform as an employee. A strong psychological contract can be developed between employer and employee by strong mutual agreement and cooperation on both the sides. It is essential for both sides to realize their rights and duties and be loyal to each other.
With the changing strategies and advancements; the psychological contract between employers and employees has taken new shapes and turns. In modern era, employees expect differently from their employer and firm compared to previous times. Employees nowadays demand easy promotions, flexible hours, assistance programs and family leaves whereas the requirements of the employers have also changed. They need employees who are capable enough of multi-tasking and can meet new challenges easily and effectively. Moreover, with growing competition in all fields; employers need employees with a better experience who prove their dedication, commitment and creativity to the assigned job.
Previously, job was a long-term contract between employers and employees in which employees get promotions with time, and there was job security but now; employees are fired if they are not able to give good performance.
Psychological contract changes with the change in the nature of work demanded from the employees by the employers. In new work context, there is competency, constant training, and work life balance.
In competitive and fast paced world; it is necessary for employers to take employees into confidence and groom them to take the best out of them. In order to gain greater commitment from employees; employer should arrange training sessions for employees on a regular basis which will help in grooming the employee and will develop strong relations between employer and employee.
Moreover, in the fast paced world; every employee wishes to work hard and have a definite career plan ahead. Therefore, regular performance reviews will be a good technique to check the employee’s performance and reinforce their career plans.
Many companies who are enjoying maximum commitment from their employees invest in them on a regular basis. By sponsoring education programs and professional development programs, employees will be able to learn new things and create value in their position. Thus, job satisfaction and interest of the company in professional development of employee will force the employee to give maximum commitment to employers.
It is a part of human nature to value people who recognize their talent and appreciate it. To gain greater commitment from employees, employer should recognize the talents of its staff and appreciate them by word of appreciation or by giving benefits other than salaries. A feeling of satisfaction in employee is the major key to gain greater commitment from them.
