Business, international affairs, law, technology, travel there are so many topics that I am interested in that the only job I can think of that will allow me to enjoy such diversity is a job as a professor. While professors must have one specific area expertise, it seems that they are also allowed or encouraged to have a wide range of interests. In addition to the flexibility that professors are given to explore their heart’s interests, I also like that as a professor, you are given a fair amount of independence to organize your work life. It is true that professors must are required and scheduled to teach class but it seems that after class or during vacations professor have freedom to travel, to research or maybe just relax.
The duties of a professor can be divided into four main categories, namely teaching and classroom activities, research and writing, student supervision, and services or responsibilities to their school. Teaching and classroom activities include developing and planning courses, preparing lectures, teaching class, giving test and exams, grading assignments and test, calculating grades. Research and writing duties include staying current in area(s) of specialization, writing and submitting research grants proposals, conducting research, analyzing research findings and writing about the results for publication, attending conferences and present research. Supervision duties include advising students regarding their courses, their future, and their study habits; writing recommendations; and supervising student research projects. Duties their school includes participating in department activities; attending school functions; serve on school committees and represent the school in outside activities. If you filter all these duties in five simple classifications it seems that the duties of a professor are teaching, writing, public speaking, mentoring students, school administration.
It seems that the primary element of becoming a professor is to develop an expertise in a subject area. This can be achieved I most cases through obtaining a doctorate degree in the subject area of interest to the professor. Before, I can get a doctorate degree I must first obtain my undergraduate degree. Naturally, this is currently my main focus. Second, as mentioned I am interested in many areas, but I cannot get a doctorate degree in them all. Accordingly, I have been exploring which subjects I am most interested in and reflecting on whether or not I can sustain my interest enough to make a career out of it. Alternatively, I have discovered that there are certain themes that run all. For instance, information technology seems to be necessary to business, international relations, law and travel. Accordingly, maybe I should focus on information technology and later think of way to combined it with my other areas of interest. Third, since the focus of a professor’s work seems centered on teaching, I think I can learn something by observing the teaching styles of my own professors. Moreover, I can talk to them about what suggestions or recommendations they may have for helping me on the road to become a professor. Lastly, besides teaching a professor must be good at or at least interested in research.
