Designer babies are a boon to parents suffering from chronic illnesses as there is no fear that the baby inherits the illness and passes on to the next generations. Infant mortality rate would decrease to a great extent. The costs of health care would decrease all over the world as the designer babies have little or no chances of acquiring illnesses.
On the other hand, designer babies have various disadvantages. The cost of technology used to produce the designer babies is very high and does not promise a positive result. Children have the right to design their own selves as they grow into adults. They have the right to become the person they choose to be. However, designer babies would not have such right as the babies have their personalities and talents pre-designed for them. Designer babies would commercialize the evolution of humans as everyone craves for a perfect baby. They are a threat to the disabled people and create inequalities in the society.
I oppose the concept of designer babies because it is a threat to mankind as every individual opts for the perfect child. It hampers the natural way of life. Moreover, the technology used in the production of designer babies is unsafe and causes various adverse effects. Designer babies may not turn out the expected way, which creates several issues on their existence. Making use of the embryos for the research of designer babies destroys potential human life. There are no strict legislations to keep a track on the production of designer babies, which would create problems in the society.
