Interview with a Nurse Leader

Introduction
The working environment for most professionals in the world is rapidly changing. The majority if not all of the employees and employers faced with a myriad of changes each day. At their places of work, the professionals are expected to adapt to new ways of carrying out their duties that present themselves in policy changes or challenging tasks. The nursing fraternity is no exception from such phenomenal changes. It is worth noting that with the competing priorities and the ever diminishing labor force, executives in the nursing field are compelled to make some hard decisions. The challenges present themselves in the multiplicity of tasks and the meeting of well-structured but competing priorities. The challenging work environment thus necessitates that the nurse executives of today develop and possess varied skills and key competencies that will help them bring about effectiveness in their field (Stichler, 2006).
Like any other profession, the nursing fraternity calls for accountability, need for customer satisfaction, productivity, retention quotas and other performance measures. The contemporary nursing executive thus has to demonstrate a high degree of organizationalmanagement, help in creating and fostering a vision as well as exhibiting unique leadership abilities. Above all these are the personal attributes of the very executives or leaders that will help them achieve their goals. Besides, their daily activities do have far reaching consequences that in most cases include creating, delivering and facilitating a culture of leadership and caring across their entire organization and or communities (Bennet, 2008). The two authors agree to the point of health and nurse executives developing and having personal attributes that foster bonding and long lasting relationships. The relationships stir up passion amongst those who give the care while at the same time help the organization achieve financial competence.
The two articles gave me thorough knowledge in preparing to interview a senior medical practitioner in a 340 bed teaching hospital. For instance, Bennet details the routine functions of a director of nursing. In my interview, I made references to the unique functions listed by Bennet alongside asking questions within the scope so defined by him. Additionally, Bennet touches on leadership and the development of a leadership plan. This helped me in the structuring of my interview questions touching on leadership and the way leadership impacts on the overall success of the hospital.
The article by Stichler on the other hand emphasizes on the need for executive nurses to demonstrate a clear vision, commitment and performance in all sectors. The article thus helped me in the preparation for the interview by enabling me structure questions touching on the personal skills and attributes necessary for effective performance. Also, the articles states that the nurse leader is expected to create a vision for the organization and effectively communicate that vision to others. The arguments helped me in preparing for the interview by structuring and asking questions touching on the hospitals vision and mission statement.
The articles outlined the typical work carried out by executive nurses, detailing the new challenges they face alongside giving suggestions on the possible personal and professional attributes the executives should embrace. The articles thus provided me with a comprehensive starting point to interview and examine the specific aspects unique to this type of assignment. The information I obtained from the interview is as listed and explained below:
