Maia Kotrosits (2010) in the article “Rereading the Canonical Identity: A Sexual Ethics of Bible Interpretation,’ articulates the basis upon which the Bible is used to determine morality and ethics in the historical context of the canon. In the first few paragraphs, she describes in clear terms why the Bible is presumed as the absolute truth upon which Christians base their faith and actions. The dilemma that exists is to whether the Bible can be the true source or identity and sexual ethics upon which humans should act and whether it is the Christian’s the ultimate realities.
She further notes that the Bible as it is, limits the view with such strict boundaries that binds one into strict identities. The gaps such as the other gospels omitted presents the readers with a critical threat to their knowledge. The fear of challenge of what one knows limits people on the strict boundaries of the Bible blinding the people from the true realities. Peter does not want to belief that it was possible for Jesus to have said things to Mary that he never said to them. Such places Women lower in the sexual ladders, responsibility, and by extension, the abilities to grasp ideas. In fact, it is basically unreasonable how many people trust the Bible as the absolute truth with attempts to justify atrocities such as mass killings and advocating for oppression of slaves by their masters. The ethics tied to such teachings depicts the fear of thinking beyond the strict boundaries. The self-conscious way of reading and interpretation of the Bible limits understanding the whole gospel. The absence of other Gospels that seem to be very intentional discredits the Bible as the absolute truth and realities of Christians. History has a critical aspect in determination of self-identity, and hence the inclusion of the other gospels ought to play a critical role since in the re-evaluation of the Bible to better the way Christians understand their identity.
In conclusion, the author brings out many controversial issues relating to the identities, the culture and the way of life as the Bible advocates. First, she notes the exclusion of some Key components in the history that could be of great importance. In addition, the strict boundaries coupled with the self-conscious reading make the whole reading and interpretation of the Bible subjective, and hence the ideologies could be questionable. For one to objectively understand the Bible, such a person has to read the Bible as well as the other Gospels that were not included in the Bible as wells to put his or her knowledge into questions by allowing completely new knowledge. However, focusing on Mary alone does not make the article convincing enough. More case studies relating to women and identity would have made the article convincing and fully conclusive.
