The Second Great Awakening was a revival meeting organized by the Protestants Rival Movement in the United States and the Protestants Rival Movement began in 1790 but gained momentum in 1820 with the increase in membership and joining of the both the Methodists and the Baptist to the movement. The movement was at its peak in late 1840s. It is believed that the movement was a reaction to deism, skepticism and rationalism. According to Paul Johnson, the Second Great Awakening in Rochester had a significant impact in the area. Johnson argues that the economic changes that occurred in the area were due to the revival meeting.
The population in the Rochester increased due to the revival meeting and also the change of social status and the gap between the poor and the rich increased as some of the lower class level individuals argued that the movement was for the wealthy. The movement brought the issue of freedom, and this was supported by most of the Black Americans because most of them were slaves and their masters mistreated them. They saw this as a source of deliverance to them, and they joined in large numbers and the revival had an impact on social, religious, and political status of Rochester.
The Second Great Awakening as discussed by Pail Johnson has a significant difference influenced a lot in the area of Rochester and Johnson describes the movement as the movement that opened up the minds of the ordinary people and bridge gap between the rich and the poor. In Johnson description of the movement, he talks about how the economic status of the area was changed. The slavery decreased according to Johnson and the analysis brought about by the notes given in class is the presence of control of the lower class citizens due to the increase in power of the rich in the society. The two analysis, acknowledge the impact of the revival meeting, but they read from different perspectives.
