The assignment, which largely focuses on the results of the self-assessments tests taken to measure the strengths and weaknesses in regard to leadership, was insightful. Several characteristics were measured in the tests taken. The following tests were the subjects tested: Team Behavior Leadership, Gaining Power, Leadership Motivation, and Leadership Competency. The paper will describe the results of these tests to develop a foundation for me to understand my current position in the leadership role, as well as areas needing improvement that will help improve what I can provide as a leader.
In the first test that measured team behavior leadership, I recognized that I am not very strong in my ability team behavior. The only area that showed strength was my ability to manage team meetings. With this information I can see that my ability to handle many of the difficult dynamic of working in a team, do not suit me very well. If I hope to achieve success as a leader I have a lot of work ahead of me in my workability with confrontation issues and. My score was 100, and if I understood correctly I ranged in the second quartile. Behavior changes in a team environment are needed; this news is not surprising to me. My patience, with team members who do not have my standards, is minimal.
The next phase of the assignment measuring the characteristics of gaining power and influence also did not provide hopeful information regarding my abilities as a leader. The highest score in this test was of retribution, and the lowest was of reciprocity. I can see that in my leadership position I tend to be use intimidation to gain power. Luckily I have a fair amount of reasoning skills that can back up factual information when determining the decision-making process that is ideal for a team’s success. My lowest score, hence my weak point, was in reciprocity. I am not one for empowering people through showing other the benefits that are possible for all. Sadly I am the type of leader that I most likely would not want to work with. Rather eye-opening when I think of the times in my life where my delivery in teams has caused tension. Even when I am capable of a solid plan of action to execute toward excellence in the goals set for the team, I lack the understanding and empathy that makes team members dislike my method and become unwilling to deliver the requested tasks. Taking this test I can unbiasedly see the problem in my methods.
When taking the leadership motivation assessment, I already sensed that I would not do very well. I often find working with other very hard, and as I begin to take the entirety of the assessments to formulate what the issue is, I can start to see the breakdown. Getting back to the test result of this assessment, my results showed that I have some uncertainty in my motivation to lead. The problems associated with my ineffective sides of leadership are most likely what keeps me unmotivated to lead. Considering I have not found a productive method of working with conflicting issues in a team, or difficult personalities, I tend to find the whole leadership task primarily annoying. The realization of this is slightly disturbing to me, but the awareness of my strengths and weaknesses will allow me to makes some changes.
It will take conscious effort for me to make these changes because of the automatic response system that I have had up to this point has been the way it is. The good news is that I know what I need to work on and what already is a strength that I need to maximize for workability in the meantime. As a focused, driven individual with an ability to plow through the tasks to attain goals, I can help in the management of keeping the team on track as we move along in the project. With some awareness of my insensitive nature and unwillingness to handle less motivated individuals patiently, I can maybe find some techniques to shift my interaction when I deal with these individuals.
Based on my analysis from the results of the various tests, I have clearly accomplished the high motivational skills to challenge myself to create goals and achieve them productively. If I work on sensitivity training of some sort, maybe I can learn new methods to incorporate in how I interact with team members. Realizing that my leadership skills are in need of serious improvement is evident when placing these results next to the experiences that have happened in previous instances of leading teams.
Seeing that I am attached and somewhat stubborn in my position is part of the problem in how I handle myself. The perfectionist side of me seems to dominate my leadership position, combined with a lack of patience; it is a big obstacle for me to effectively lead my teams. The urgency of my shift in behavior, in the next opportunity to I have to lead a team is crucial to my long-term success as a leader who inspires and helps people produce excellence. My focus in my ability to relate to others is one of the priorities as I move forward in my training for leadership. Other areas of my leadership skill in terms of the technicalities of completing work and delegating tasks are proficient and need less attention. Patience and sensitivity are the biggest factors that require a large amount of work to attain the goals I have for the type of leader I hope to be.
