My life as an artist started long time ago, back when I was around 2 years old and found a yellow paint in our recently renovated apartment. My mother still enjoys telling this story to her friends. I doubt my father truly appreciated the painting I proudly presented him the following evening with his new white shirt as a canvas. My eyes were shining so happily when I observed the fruits of my creativity, the masterpiece I created with so much devotion and effort, that my father did not even dare to scold me for my deed. Instead, he tousled my hair and smiled, hoping that my longing for art will end as soon as the last signs of renovation disappear from our home. Back then he could not even imagine how wrong he was.
Be it the influence of this little story from childhood, or any other occasion, but I could not imagine my life without art ever since. When I studied in grade school, I started attending INSTRUMENT lessons. Even now I still practice from time to time when I am stuck at certain and need some inspiration in order to move on. I was around 15 years old when I realized I wanted to dedicate my life to sculpture and creativity. I have been enjoying modeling since graduate school where I first started modeling figures out of plasticine. Later on, my mother started buying me sets of plastic clay for modeling. At first it all started like game when I was simply copying what was drawn on the box and following the instructions. As time passed by, I came up with more and more complicated designs and eventually made up my mind to join pottery courses. There we studied different technics used in pottery and studied the works of the most outstanding sculptors. I was fascinated by the masterpieces those sculptors managed to create out of an ordinary clay, and it seemed to me they put a piece of their soul in each and every knickknack they created. My mother always used to tell me: find what you truly enjoy doing, and you will never work a day. That’s exactly what happened with me: I fell asleep thinking about new designs I had in my head and woke up from the urge of realizing them right away. This is the reason I am writing this essay.
When I graduated from high school, I got successfully accepted to San Francisco Art Institute since I wanted to learn more the technical side of my future profession. The recent events that took part in France show that the artist is no longer a profession, but a social figure. We need to realize that we may sometimes be misunderstood of even but we still need to carry on the path we have chosen for – to create and indeed, “brush off the dust of daily life off human souls”. In my opinion, California College of the Arts is one of those institutions that truly understands this statement and I believe I share the same ideas and hopes. I am an international student and have travelled quite a lot around the world, meeting and working with different people, and I think the diversity that CCA promotes will suite me really well. I am convinced that I will be able to contribute to the program a lot since I have quite an experience to share with other participants, and will be able to grasp some fresh and innovative ideas and practices from their side as well. We are all applying here to persuade a certain goal in our lives and I believe CCA will help me to realize my dream and become an acknowledged sculptor one day whose works will shake this world.
