Based on the study of Marschall, et al. (2013), the findings of the several studies included in their research were not enough to recommend a specific practice change because of the variation in the duration and brand of the prophylaxis and the length of observation time of the studies. The differences noted and the presence of different biases may have affected the results of the study which is why more meta-analysis of studies should be done to be able to present a strong evidence for the implementation of a particular change in the practice of nursing.
In addition, despite the evidence-based protective effect of prophylaxis against subsequent urinary tract infection, there is still little knowledge about the possible long term consequences of using antibiotic prophylaxis. According to Stevens (2013), the information acquired from new researches should be used to be able to develop strategies and activities to promote the well-being of the public. One way to make sure that strategies and changes in practice are for the promotion of well-being and prevention of avoidable illnesses is to first determine the possible consequences and fall backs of a proposed practice change. In the case of this article, the possible side effects of widespread use of antibiotic prophylaxis upon the removal of urinary catheter must be carefully focused on and determined first before changing the practice of health care workers on administering prophylaxis. Also, the additional costs for the prophylaxis and the development of resistance in case other people are unnecessarily administered with the medication should be considered. Thus, to be able to promote prudent avoidance, it is better to conduct further researches and discussions about the knowledge lacking about this topic before automatically implementing changes in policies. By doing this, people will not be faced by an epidemic which should have been prevented if only more researchers focused on completely understanding the connection between antibiotic prophylaxis and subsequent urinary tract infection.
