BP oil spill in the deepwater horizon in the Gulf of Mexico is one of the well-known water pollution incidents that occurred in the world. Various sources reports the incident some of them being the U.S. government, the U.S. news, the BP Company news among many others. The spill was very serious has it had various damages to both human beings and aquatic life. For instance, the spill led to death of many sea animals namely fish, birds, sea turtles, mollusks and marine mammals among many others. It also destroyed their inhabitants in the sea and also decreased their breeding. On the other hand, it also led to various health issues to people who were involved in clean-up efforts this is because the chemical in the oil was toxic (Mccauley 55).
Some of the short term effects of the oil include oil coated bird’s feather thus affecting buoyancy and caused ulcers to mammals that further led to internal bleeding. On the other hand, some other long term damages include decline in recreation, unbalanced food web and decreased fish and wildlife populations. This brought a lot of concern to various departments within the government.
The government was very much concerned with the damage that the company had caused. As a result, the U.S. president Barrack Obama gave the department of interior and Homeland Security, NOAA and the EPA administrator the mandate to assess the damage caused. To help maintain the issue, the U.S. government through its state department sourced for various assistances from 23 countries. The government and company had discussion through which they concluded that BP was to provide $20 billion to settle all the claims that arose from the deep water spillage. The government also played a great role in helping the company to clean up the mess in the sea (Guarino all).
