Smoking is an addictive habit that apparently takes away the stress away from a person but leaves deleterious effects on health that are often fatal. ‘Smoking kills’ is what goes on commonly about smoking, and there are many reasons for it. The after-effects of smoking on the health of an individual are instantaneous and smoking not only harms the person who is inhaling the smoke, rather the others around them also suffer from the exhaled smoke and become passive smokers. There is no justification for the way it is taken; tobacco is harmful to the body, and it damages the internal organs.
The immediate side effects of smoking occur the moment a person begins to smoke. As soon as a person takes a puff of smoke into them, the respiratory system efficiently begins to absorb the various substances that come in with the smoke. Tobacco itself contains carcinogenic components and toxic elements. These are very readily absorbed into the blood stream and travel into the respiratory tract. However, carcinogenic elements act later on when a person becomes a regular, heavy smoker. The immediate effect of smoking is an addiction- caused by the substance nicotine present in tobacco. The brain will become affiliated with nicotine in a fraction of a second and becomes stimulated to ask for more and more of it. Smoking also immediately increases the heart rate and blood pressure of a person. Also, the components in the blood start to alter as a result of smoking. The platelets in the blood, which are the clotting factors to stop bleeding if a person is wounded, for instance, begin to get clumped up. These can form a clot, and if the clot stops in the wrong place in the body, it can cause a heart attack or brain stroke.
Smoking also causes yellowing of nails, early wrinkling of the skin, bad breath, smelly hair, yellowing fingers and high cholesterol. Regular or chain smokers also suffer from constriction of blood vessels that leads to pale fingers and danger of heart attack and possible stroke. Smoking also has the perverse effect of suppressing the appetite of a person which is harmful to the stomach and intestines. In the later stages of life, a smoker can suffer from cancer; of the lungs, the liver and blood. Smoking is also harmful to the psychological state of mind because it causes anxiety, irritability and high dependency on smoking. Bronchitis and respiratory diseases also occur frequently with smoking.
Knowing that smoking is harmful, many people still go for it and even if they do face any health problems, they remain adamant on smoking and do not prefer to quit. The most basic cause of smoking is peer pressure and the desire to appear ‘cool’ before others and make a statement. Some young people would smoke in order to get accepted by a certain group that is apparently more popular and accepted in their eyes. In order to impress others, people turn to smoking, first as a measure to relieve curiosity and then turn to it habitually. Adults would smoke because they feel it provides an outlet to let out their stress, pressure and tensions. People going through emotional problems, financial issues and isolation in life may turn to smoking as a means of getting mental peace. Some people are also known to smoke to control their body weight and prevent themselves from getting fat.
Smoking is a habit that has always been discouraged from acquiring, and smokers are at a great health risk because smoking has dangerous and fatal effects to a person’s health. People smoke for various reasons, yet smoking should not be encouraged and people must quit it.
