I had a pleasure of sharing my pamphlet with Mrs. W a Hispanic social worker. Mrs. W has two boys of age one month and 2 years. We had great discussion about her family, health awareness matters and where she is living with her family. I also asked her about the behavior of her children such as whether they wash their hands before eating. From the interaction I informed her about the dangers of lead poisoning and activities or objects which are exposed the family on a daily basis. I also informed her on the symptoms to check to know if her children have been exposed to lead and how to prevent lead poisoning.
The discussion was informative and exciting. The experience gave me the opportunity to experience the real effects of literacy competence on the health care. The discussion went well since Mrs. W was able to understand most of the information on the pamphlet. She was fully involved in the discussion asking questions where could not understand. However, due to her low literacy lever on some of technical terms and body mechanism she could not understand everything. For instance, I wish I could have expound well enough in a simple language on how lead poison can manage to stay in the body for years without being passed out of the body (excreted) like any other waste in the body. What can be improved on this discussion is using pictures and diagrams to explain how lead gets into the body; circulate around the body within the blood or being stored in the bones of human body. This will improve the education on lead poisoning.
