Disaster is an event that is accompanied by destruction, human suffering, physical injury, and death resulting to permanent changes to ecosystems, human societies, and the environment. Some of the examples of disasters include earthquake, flood, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions among others. The catastrophe refers to events that cause physical suffering subsequent to its ability to destroy most of the society. Trauma refers to an emotional suffering caused by catastrophic events and disasters such as accidents, earthquakes, and drought among others.

The Titanic event was at the same time a disaster and a catastrophe. However, there is a thin line that distinguishes the catastrophic event and the disaster in the Titanic.

The titanic event qualifies as a disaster because it caused human suffering, physical injury, deaths and permanent change in the human society. During the Titanic event, about 1,500 people out of 2,200 people in the ship lost their lives and hence caused permanent change to the human society. On the other hand, the Titanic event qualifies as a catastrophe because its damage spread to diverse communities who were either directly or indirectly affected by event causing a lot of traumas.

The aftermath of the Titanic is the one that decided whether the event was catastrophic or otherwise. The consequences of the event spread to different communities, especially the families of the people in the ship, and the economy of the country as well. The sudden event caused physical suffering and trauma to different communities that were affected, and the whole world.

Other disciplines include psychology, economics, environmental studies, earth science, geography, political science, and anthropology.

The traumatic event was experienced after the sinking of the Titanic sheep. The families of the people in the sheep were shocked by the bad news while some of the survivors developed serious trauma. For instance, Anna McGowan was shocked by the event, and she suffered permanent injuries, frostbite, and shock. Although she survived, McGowan was in a similar state of the post-traumatic stress disorder. Other survivors such as Annie Robinson, Dr. Washington Dodge, Dr. Henry William Frauenthal, and Juha Niskanen among others committed suicide several months after the disaster.

In Titanic, a disaster can be represented in various ways. The titanic event can be considered as a disaster because it caused human suffering, physical injury, deaths and permanent change in the human society. For instance, majority of the people in the ship died destruction of the property, and deterioration of the economy. The event also caused social unrest with ideologies such as culture, nature, gender, and class.

The Titanic was a literal representation that represented the social inequality to show how disaster affects various classes, and how those classes react to the disaster. The disaster was free from exaggeration because they had inadequate technology to control and maneuver the ship and hence caused the disaster. For instance, the steaming was too fast, and they did not have the ice warning information.

The negative representation of the Titanic includes lack of binoculars, fast steaming, substandard rivets, inadequate lifeboats, inability to maneuver the boat at the last minute, and strong tides. This negative representation is anticipated to be the cause of the disaster.

The powerful representation of the Titanic includes 2 hours of sinking contrary to the engineer’s estimate of 60-90 minutes. Additionally, the ship has a maximum speed of about 26 miles per hours. The musicians were able to play for two hours as the ship was sinking.

The representation of the Titanic impacted emotions and reasons because the negative representation was viewed as the cause of the disaster. People blamed those negative representations and were emotional about them.
