Implementing a new health program is not an easy task. There are many steps involved and the steps need to be carried out efficiently for a smooth implementation. The steps needed to implement a new program addressing colon cancer are assessment, planning, executing and evaluating. An assessment is needed in order to properly identify what type of program is needed and to see if the health promotion would be beneficial to the targeted participants. The assessment would include gathering information about the target community, the type of program that will work, barriers that will hinder the program, what resources are available for the promotion efforts and opportunities. These assessments could be conducted by mailing out surveys to potential participants, visiting cancer clinics or speaking with medical professionals about the type of patients they serve.
After the assessment phase, the planning process is the next step. The planning phase in any implementation is very important and often called the most critical step. This is because in the planning stage, specifics are outlined. The assessment information is reviewed and more detailed plans are put into place. Goals and objectives are formulated, and timelines are created to keep the program on track. During this step it is also beneficial to organize the project team and give the team clearly defined roles. This is important for each team member to know what they will contribute to the program and how their role will impact the program.
The execution phase is when the program is put into place and actually begins. This is where the planning phase is useful, because the timelines created in the planning phase would be used here. Execution or deployment of the program should be conducted in phases. The program should be well announced to the community and potential participants and should be monitored for issues, or changes as needed.
The final stage in implementing a program is evaluation. All programs must be evaluated for their effectiveness and if they actually met the intended goals. Health educators can accomplish evaluations in many different ways; they may use statistical data, follow-up surveys, number of people served and various other feedback methods to evaluate the program. In the evaluation stage, health educators can revise the program based on the feedback or incorporate new promotions based on the needs of participants.
The kickoff activities for the colon cancer program include two parts, a kickoff planning meeting and the actual kickoff day. The kickoff meeting would include a power session with all team members and with the community advocates that are involved in the project. The team would need to review their project goals, and account for any last minute changes or additions. Health educators would also need to make sure that the hospitals, clinics and cancer centers are informed about the new Colon Cancer program. The team would need to ensure that the program has been effectively promoted. They will discuss specifics such as flyers, rallies, social media pages, informational sessions, and how each of these activities has assisted with promotional efforts. Once the kickoff meetings have finished and the team has reviewed all of the materials, and program information, the program is ready to be launched.
The actual program kickoff should be met with some fanfare. There should be a ribbon cutting ceremony (if the program is part of a center or hospital). If the program is held in a community location such as a park or a church, there could be balloons, light refreshments, and music for the event. Some of the activities on opening day would include a self-test cancer questionnaire, games and activities that promote cancer prevention and information about free colon cancer screenings. The project team would need to be present on the opening day to ensure that everything runs smoothly and that there are knowledgeable individuals present to answer questions from participants or other community personnel.
