Business communication is the interchanging of ideas, beliefs, and attitudes among persons. Successful communication between employees, management, and customers is the cornerstone of the company's growth and development. Business communication becomes fruitful only if the receiver understands a message in a way the sender encoded. However, there are multiple factors that can hamper the communication. Cultural diversity poses a potential threat of misunderstanding among people with diverse cultural backgrounds. Fundamental elements of a culture include language( verbal and non-verbal), religion, work ethics and education.
Familiarity with the language is essential to exchanging thoughts. There are numerous languages in the world influenced by local cultures. As such, the same expression may carry a different meaning for the other thereby causing communication issues. Also, the exchange of ideas may create a problem if the sender and receiver are not compatible with skills and qualifications.
Succinctly put, all components of culture affect expression and exchange of ideas to an extent. For instance, a person may value accuracy over speed while his/her co-worker may appreciate speedy work performance. This is a work behavior that may affect the understanding and communication. Likewise, a person from Asian continent may consider a German harsh because of his/her straightforward attitude . These perceptions may crop up misunderstandings among people thereby affecting their communiqué. There is a plethora of examples explaining that cultural diversity is likely to foster team conflicts.
A historical case of cultural miscommunication is the failure of Euro Disneyland in Paris. Scholars have identified that the management ignored cultural variations between America and France that contributed to its failure. Disneyland followed two major traditions in France, i.e., not serving wine, and offering regional American food. It proved counterproductive because alcohol was fundamental to French people. Secondly, they exhibited little adaptation to regional American cuisine. The case of Euro Disney, thus, is a classic example of the miscommunication among the customers and the management. The activities by the management were considered as an effort to Americanize Disneyland in France; it proved futile.

Other notable aspects affecting business communication include:

Functional relationship between the sender and receiver of the message
Positional differences
Past experiences
If the sender and the receiver belong to different functional departments, they may not successfully exchange ideas. For example, a product design manager may not efficiently decode the messages containing financial data by Finance Manager.
Studies have identified that communication may fail between two persons if they are at different levels in the organization. It is the usual tendency of seniors to pay less attention to the messages of subordinates. Likewise, subordinates may try to avoid seniors' instructions to stay away from additional work responsibilities.
Last but not the least, business communication is considerably affected by the success of failure of past conversation among people. For instance, if an organization fails to market product properly in the past, it is less likely that the company will fetch customers' trust in the future venture. Past experiences can be both ways, positive and negative. The fruitfulness and failure of previous communication are likely to impact further messages.
