John Hughes’ work in “Vacation 58” was composed literary and is full of various elements of literature including narration and the use of direct quotes. Throughout the whole text, the author has evidently supported the theme of confusion using direct quotes and the power of narration. In the story, the author has explained vividly about how all characters are confused in their efforts to realize some of their planed of the day. It is from this that the paper seeks to prove that the use of direct quotes has been used with narration to shed light on the level of confusion that each character portrays.
In the first place, there is confusion as to whether the persona’s family will go to Disneyland for vacation of not because Walt was shot and the fate of going is not determined. The audience learns about this incidence through the narration given by the persona. The confusion regarding the time to sleep is highlighted through direct quotes between the mother and the persona. It is through the same confusion that the entire family oversleeps; a move that makes them wonders whether they should use a plane to the destination or use a brand-new 1958 Plymouth sport car. After noting that they are still late, the persona’s dad engages in a battle of words with his wife over breakfast.
Dad’s confusion about being late for the journey affects him in such a way that he does not concentrate; thereby, making him to ran over a bicycle rider. Through direct conversation of the persona’s father and mother, the audience learns that they spend their night on the roadside along the way. For this reason, they reaches Auntie Catherine’s place at 10pm. It should be noted that the events that take place at their aunt’s place is known through direct conversation. Their aunt notes their confusion and gives them direction using direct quotes and narration because he knows that they might get lost along the way or be late.
The persona’s family manages to leave their aunt’s place and continue for their journey, but their entire journey is shows how they are confusion. They engage the police along the way because the persona’s father flouts traffic rules and the whole issue makes them confused. In their entire journey, the audience shares into their mix-up situation through direct quotes and narration.
