Global Obesity Response is Unacceptably slow
Introduction
Obesity as most people know about had become an epidemic problem that branches out to other serious medical conditions. Despite the massive public awareness campaigns initiated to combat the prevalence of the disease, it appears that the global response towards the eradication of the epidemic still remains slow. The Medical News Today recently published an article about the perceived crawling global response to fight obesity suggests that although preventive measures were put in place, the worldwide target of obesity decline rate still remains unachieved. This discussion will tackle the importance of the issue addressed in the article by David McNamee to the nursing practice. The importance of the perceived slow global response to obesity crisis towards the nursing practice is the establishment of evidence-based practices that will help intensify the global response rate through increased participation from the nursing sector.

Importance of the Issue on Evidence-based Practices

Understanding the current situation on global awareness about obesity leads the nursing sector to push forward in becoming more involved in driving the global response to a reasonable rate. According to the article by McNamee (2015), the slow global response in reducing the growing population of obese patients was rooted from the government’s lack of political initiative to propose a solution instead of waiting for the food industry’s voluntary actions. Furthermore, the article emphasized the fact that meeting the World Health Organization’s (WHO) reduction target can only be achieved by strengthening accountability systems, constraining the role of the food industry, and stronger political leadership (McNamee, 2015). In addition, creating a public demand for healthier food environment requires a formation of stronger public policy.
On the other hand, the role of the nursing sector in ascertaining an effective global advocacy response rate is an active participation in healthcare policy making to device new practices that focuses on obesity eradication. For example, upon learning the fact that the global response rate is inadequate due to the aforementioned factors, the nursing sector can act on behalf of the public sector to establish healthcare protocols that can be put into practice across the entire industry. Among the initiatives that the nursing sector can contribute to eradicate obesity is to make disease management available in primary care. In addition, nurses have varying attitudes and behavioral perspective towards BMI and Obesity, which on the long run creates a barrier in effective care delivery. The nursing environment could change attitude towards obesity in order to create more opportunity for the patients to confidently approach the care providers to address their health issues.

Conclusion

The article is an important piece of information that provides a basis not only for the nursing practitioners, but also to policymakers and the business sector in creating an initiative to fight obesity. Although the article encompasses the negative implication of the lack of adequate global initiative to address the health issue at hand, it also serves as a reminder that there is still a window of opportunity to act accordingly. As for the nursing profession, the issue is important in the sense that it opens an opportunity to integrate new practices and attitude towards obesity that in effect would also help reduce the growing number of obese population.
