Hunting Seasons

It was November 2008 and a tragic incident happened as Marcelo Lucero, an undocumented immigrant from Ecuador together with his friend was violently attacked by a group of teenagers who were out to hunt for Latinos. The incident happened in the town of Patchogue in Long Island. During the attack, Angel Loja escaped calling on is friend to follow. But Lucero put up a fight, got stabbed and succumbed to his wound in the process. It was not the first incident that a group of young men have attacked and killed a member of the Latino or Hispanics. Recently, there are group of teenagers who shockingly look for Latinos to beat, the heinous act is a display of the young men’s sentiments over the increasing number of Hispanic immigrants in the locality. What is more saddening bout the attack and murder of Lucero was that the attackers are also descendants of immigrants who have come ahead in Long Island.
Lucero and Loja are childhood friends that have come to Long Island as undocumented immigrants from Ecuador in the 1990’s. On the invitation of Lucero, the friends have gone into a night stroll in one of the street of Patchogue, though they are mindful of the dangers that faced Latino’s from undisciplined teenage group in the community. The sad case of Lucero’s murder was one among the increasing cases of attacks against ethnic groups, those against the Hispanics comprising 64% of the cases.
The influx of illegal immigrants has raised different reactions from different levels in the American society. It was factual that the country wants immigrants who have proper documents, who speaks English, does not cause any problems and is preferably white. The immigrants are playing a vital role in shaping the way of life of most industrialized countries. However, there was a growing dislike towards undocumented immigrants. The negative attitudes that the young generation have over them is fueled by the negativity they hear around, in school, from the media and even from adults at home.
For one, the undocumented immigrants especially the Hispanics are hated or disliked by most, they are viewed as despicable people, especially those who have difficulty in understanding and speaking English. The anti-immigrant sentiments that was prevalent in Patchogue, New York sparked hatred among the restless youth of this town. Jeffrey Conroy, the young man who stabbed Lucero, was one who was affected by the negative feelings of the public against Latino immigrants.
Angle Loja has to testify on account of what transpired during that fateful night of November. They have grown together in the small town of Gualaceo, Cuenca in Ecuador. Loja came from a lower middle class family, while Lucero was among those less privileged. Both young men have wanted more than being in their tiny home town. Lucero have gone ahead to New York in 1993, and in August of 1994, Loja followed on the voyage of most young men in Ecuador: that is embarking on a difficult sea journey to New York. Loja was at lost upon his arrival in New York, so he agreed on the offer of one fellow to take him to Manhattan where he eventually shared a room with eight other men. Hi later found a job in a small Chinese restaurant, but decided to quit immediately. He can stand the pains of hard work, but the derogatory remark from the restaurant owner is something he cannot endure. He later found a better job at a Sharro restaurant across Madison Square Garden. Later he moved to Queens to stay with a sister who just came from Ecuador herself; and he found that the neighborhood is better than where he sued to live in Manhattan. In year 2000, he immediately headed to Patchogue, at the invitation and news of Lucero of better living and better jobs.
