The organization has greater control over cost drivers because they determine what to produce and how to produce it. The company can exploit economies of scale in order to exploit cost drivers. They can also invest in new technologies, better training for their employees and new product ideas creating a competitive edge in order to exploit competitive drivers (Tamer et al. 2013).
Examples of companies that use the multi-domestic strategy include McDonald and MTV. They both tailor their products according to the local preferences of the customers. McDonald does not sell beef burgers in India while MTV customizes its programming in New Zealand, Pakistan among other countries. Examples of companies using the global strategy include Apple and Microsoft. The companies offer the same products around the world.
Characteristics that an international manager needs include ability to work with international teams, sensitivity to different cultures and an open, non-judgmental personality. Companies can prepare managers for international assignments by training them on how to improve relational skills, how to adapt to new situations and increasing their understanding of the company’s global strategy.
Managers can position themselves for international experiences and careers by investing in learning new languages, polishing their communication and negotiation skills. They can also undertake short-term international placements that will increase their experience of working in the global setting.
The responsibility of the country manager is to market the company locally, manage customers, handle external relations, offering leadership and developing local talent. Their characteristics include flexibility and ability to adapt to new situations and self-reliance. The challenges they face include implementing global strategies passed without their input yet they are inappropriate for their markets. Country managers may also be unable to respond to local customer demands because of the global strategy in place.
