Literatures that enlighten and give crucial details on the interaction and bonding between man and nature are rare. However, Edward Abbey is one of the writers who enjoy writing about natures and the association or connection it has with humankind. In his novel “The Monkey Wrench Gang,” Edward Abbey explicitly describes the relationship that exists between nature and man.
Specifically, the book ‘The Monkey Wrench Gang’ is set in Southwestern United States. The principal characters in the story are four environmental activists working to stop logging, strip mining, and oil drilling in the region. It is amazing how the four, throughout the journey, find strength in one another and discover where their loyalties in truth lie. The four principal characters include a wealthy wise surgeon by the name Doctor Sarvis and Bonnie Abbzug, his female assistant. We also have Seldom Seen or Smith, who is a Jack Mormon river guide and George Hayduke, a Green Beret Vietnam veteran. It is surprising that as a group working together sometimes, they purpose to destroy a system they view as the polluter and destroyer of the environment. In the chapter 6: The raid at the Comb Wash, they attack deserted bulldozers while the arm of the law closes on them. While most people destroy and mismanage the environment, only a few seem concerned about the general state of nature. Ideally, the chapter is full of adventure. The reader experiences numerous instances of suspense, as a combination of tension, chases, small tragedies, and escapes mark the plot of the narrative. The reader is largely mesmerized by the sight this team of four individuals, who are determined and ready to achieve their objectives, plan assaults on unmanned trains and road building vehicles. As they succeed in one plot, they are encouraged to embark on another. I firmly believe the moral lesson illustrated in the Abbey characters is that despite our differences, a unity of purpose can help us achieve our aims.
Furthermore, Abbey portrays the environment in particular and nature, in general, as mysterious, thereby provoking the readers’ desire to unravel its mystery. He further depicts nature as an embodiment of man’s daily life, intertwined and comprehensible only in small proportions. In other words, Abbey attempts to inform us that as human beings, we can learn so much about of ourselves from the nature that surrounds us. Ideally, Abbey has fallen in love with nature. His love for nature is widely manifested through his expressions of sceneries and beauties that ordinary people can hardly recognise. For instance, he states “the little heart-shaped tracks of the former apparent in the sand” while referring to the nature. With such expressions, it is evident that he has a close connection with nature. Further, it is not normal to describe one’s first encounter with a mountain lion as ‘mutual curiosity,’ as Abbey does. He further asserts that in their meeting, they felt more wonder than fear. Essentially, he is trying to inform the readers that man can relate and bond with nature strongly. According to Abbey, nature’s beauty and mystery are factors that makes it interesting; therefore, creating a yearning for a man to discover and connect with it. There is no doubt that his story is captivating, as it highlights the numerous beauties and wonders of nature that are too complex understand.
